Mental Health Treatment Plans
Mental Health Treatment Plans are available through our general practice service for patients experiencing anxiety, low mood, stress or other mental health concerns. A Mental Health Treatment Plan allows eligible patients to access Medicare rebates for sessions with a registered mental health professional.
Many people choose to speak with their GP as a first step when seeking support. General practitioners are trained to assess mental health concerns, provide initial guidance and coordinate appropriate referrals. At our clinic, mental health care is approached with professionalism, discretion and respect.
What Is a Mental Health Treatment Plan?
A Mental Health Treatment Plan is a structured plan prepared by your GP following a comprehensive consultation. It outlines your concerns, identifies treatment goals and provides a referral to a registered mental health professional where clinically appropriate.
The plan enables eligible patients to receive Medicare rebates for a limited number of mental health sessions each calendar year. Your GP will determine suitability based on your individual circumstances and symptoms.
Who May Benefit From a Mental Health Treatment Plan?
Mental Health Treatment Plans are generally considered for patients experiencing clinically significant symptoms such as:
- Anxiety disorders
- Depression
- Adjustment difficulties
- Stress-related conditions
- Trauma-related symptoms
- Other concerns assessed by your GP
During your consultation, your GP will discuss your symptoms in detail and determine whether a structured plan is appropriate based on clinical assessment.
How the Process Works
A longer GP appointment is required to allow time for thorough assessment and discussion. During this consultation, your GP will explore your current symptoms, relevant history, lifestyle factors and any contributing stressors.
If clinically appropriate, your GP will prepare the Mental Health Treatment Plan and provide a referral to a registered mental health professional of your preference. After completing the initial sessions, a review appointment with your GP is required to assess progress and determine whether additional sessions are suitable within current Medicare guidelines.
Medicare Rebates and Coordinated Care
With a valid Mental Health Treatment Plan, eligible patients can access Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions with a registered mental health provider per calendar year, subject to current government guidelines and review requirements.
